How it works

Energy cost = usage × rate. Subtotal = energy cost + fixed charge. Estimated monthly bill = subtotal × (1 + tax ÷ 100). Actual all-in rate = actual bill ÷ usage. The difference subtracts the estimate from the actual total. Use the comparison to spot charges or tiered pricing that the simple model does not include.

Worked example, step by step

Take the defaults: 600 kWh used in a month at $0.17/kWh, a $12 standing charge, 5% tax and an actual bill of $120.

Energy cost = 600 kWh × $0.17 = $102.

Subtotal = $102 + $12 standing charge = $114.

Estimated bill = $114 × 1.05 = $119.70.

Actual all-in rate = $120 ÷ 600 kWh = $0.20/kWh.

Actual versus estimated difference = $120 − $119.70 = $0.30.

The close match suggests the listed rate, fixed charge and tax explain nearly all of this example bill. A larger gap can point to tiered rates, demand charges, fuel adjustments or another fee that needs to be entered separately.

The three levers that actually change your bill

Usage (kWh) is the lever you control most directly, and it is dominated by a handful of high-draw uses: heating, cooling, water heating, and major appliances like dryers and ovens. Unit rate is set by your tariff and supplier. Switching plans, moving usage to off-peak hours on a time-of-use tariff, or generating your own power with solar are the main ways to lower the effective rate you pay per kWh.

Fixed charges and tax are the part you cannot reduce by saving energy — they apply regardless of usage. The only way to change them is to switch to a plan with a lower standing charge, which mainly benefits low-usage households.

To sanity-check a suspiciously high bill, compare the kWh figure here against your own meter reading rather than the provider's estimate. Estimated bills are common and are sometimes too high; a quick meter reading tells you whether you are actually using what you are being charged for.
