About HowMuchWatts
HowMuchWatts provides free, easy-to-use calculators that help people understand the cost and savings of everyday energy decisions — from going solar to switching to a heat pump or an electric car.
Who creates the content
Pages are published by the HowMuchWatts Editorial Team. We are an independent project, not an energy company, solar installer, utility, or equipment manufacturer. We do not publish under invented engineer or reviewer personas, and we do not claim professional qualifications we do not have.
How calculators are created and reviewed
Each calculator starts with a defined formula. Defaults and physical assumptions are checked against named public sources such as the U.S. Energy Information Administration, Department of Energy, ENERGY STAR, NREL, or manufacturer documentation as appropriate. We test the worked examples and edge cases, publish the formula on the page, and show a real review date. See the complete calculator methodology and source policy.
Software-assisted workflows help us apply formulas, generate consistent pages, and check links across the library. They do not replace source verification: citations, calculations, safety boundaries, and commercial claims are reviewed before publication. Automation is used for consistency, not to invent expertise or unsupported facts.
How product comparisons are made
Product comparisons use current manufacturer specifications, manuals, compatibility information, and clearly identified public sources. Unless a page explicitly says otherwise, they are not hands-on reviews. We do not copy marketplace reviews or present unverified user comments as our own experience. Our product comparison policy explains how selections, limits, disclosures, and updates are handled.
Why the site exists
The goal is to help a reader answer a practical question with their own numbers without surrendering an email address or becoming a sales lead. Models are kept understandable, assumptions remain editable, and important limitations are stated beside the result.
How the site is funded
Some pages contain clearly disclosed Amazon affiliate links. If a qualifying purchase is made through one, HowMuchWatts may earn a commission at no extra cost to the buyer. Product inclusion is not sold, manufacturers do not approve our conclusions, and affiliate relationships do not change the formula or result. Advertising may also support the site when available.
Corrections and contact
When a formula, source, product specification, or explanation is wrong or out of date, we review and correct it and update the page review date. Report an error or suggest an improvement at hello@howmuchwatts.com.
