When a battery is worth adding
- Low export payments. If your utility pays little for solar you send back to the grid, storing it for your own evening use is worth more than exporting it.
- Big peak/off-peak gap. Even without solar, charging a battery off-peak and using it at peak prices can pay off if the gap is large enough.
- You need outage backup. This is a real value a battery adds that solar alone cannot — factor it in even if the pure payback maths is marginal.
The order that works for most homes
- Install solar sized to your usage (see our solar sizing guide).
- Live with it for a billing cycle or two and see your real export rate and usage pattern.
- If export payments are low or you want outage backup, add a battery — most systems support this as a retrofit.

Should I buy solar panels or a battery first?
Solar panels first, in almost all cases — they generate the savings a battery merely reshuffles. A battery only pays for itself if there is a meaningful gap between your peak and off-peak (or export) rates.
Is a battery worth it without solar?
It can be, if you have a large gap between peak and off-peak electricity rates, or you specifically need backup power during outages. Otherwise the payback is usually longer than solar alone.
Can I add a battery later?
Yes — most solar systems can have a battery added later ("AC-coupled" retrofit). It is common to install solar first, then add storage once you know your real export rates and usage pattern.
