How it works
Energy per load = dryer power × hours per load. Cost per load = energy × rate. Yearly cost = cost per load × loads per week × 52; monthly is the yearly figure ÷ 12.
Frequently asked questions
Are heat-pump dryers cheaper to run?
Much cheaper — they use roughly half to a third of the energy of a conventional vented or condenser dryer, though they cost more upfront and dry more slowly.
How can I cut drying costs?
Spin laundry faster before drying, dry full loads, clean the lint filter, and air-dry when you can. A heat-pump dryer is the biggest long-term saving.
Why is the dryer so expensive?
It combines high power (heating element) with long run times, which together use a lot of energy per load.
