Electric Vehicle Ownership Costs
Charging cost is only one part of EV ownership. A useful comparison connects annual mileage, realistic vehicle efficiency, the price mix for home and public charging, charging losses, available charging power, and the other ownership costs that differ from a gasoline vehicle.

A calculator is useful only when its inputs describe the same real-world scenario.

Convert driving into battery energy
Start with miles driven and realistic efficiency in miles per kWh or kWh per 100 miles. Seasonal temperature, speed, tires, cabin heating or cooling, and towing can change efficiency, so test more than one scenario.

Use the charging rate you will actually pay
Home, workplace, and public charging can have different prices and fee structures. Include charging losses when estimating electricity drawn from the wall. If a time-of-use tariff applies, separate off-peak and peak charging rather than using one blended rate.

Match charging power to dwell time
A faster charger is not automatically necessary. Compare the energy needed after a normal day with the hours the car remains parked. The onboard-charger limit and available circuit can cap speed even when the charging station has a higher rating.

Compare ownership costs consistently
Use the same annual mileage and ownership period for both vehicles. Include fuel or electricity, purchase-price difference, installation, insurance, maintenance, incentives, financing, and resale assumptions instead of treating charging cost as total ownership cost.
