How it works
EV cost = annual miles ÷ EV efficiency × electricity rate. Petrol cost = annual miles ÷ mpg × petrol price. Yearly savings = petrol cost − EV cost. The 5-year figure simply multiplies the yearly saving by five. It compares fuel only — not purchase price, insurance or maintenance.
Frequently asked questions
Are EVs really cheaper to run?
In most places, yes — electricity per mile is usually a fraction of petrol. The gap depends heavily on your local electricity and fuel prices, which you can enter above.
Does this include charging at public stations?
No — it assumes home charging rates. Public fast charging can cost 2–4× more, narrowing the savings.
What about the higher price of the car?
This tool compares running costs only. To judge total cost you would also weigh purchase price, incentives, maintenance and resale value.
