Choose a Kill A Watt when simplicity and local data matter

The P4460 is a dedicated measurement tool. Plug it into a compatible 120 V wall outlet, connect one appliance, and cycle through the readings on its display. Because the data is shown locally, you do not need to create an account, connect Wi-Fi, or keep a phone nearby.

It is particularly useful when you want to test several ordinary plug-in devices one after another. Accumulated kWh and elapsed time matter more than an instant watt reading for appliances that cycle, such as refrigerators and dehumidifiers. Entering your electricity rate lets the P4460 forecast cost over longer periods.

The limitation is access. A display meter behind a refrigerator or desk can be hard to read, and it does not give you a remote chart. It also cannot measure hard-wired equipment or an entire electrical panel.

Kasa lists live and historical energy data, schedules, remote control, Matter support, and bill estimates that can use a flat or time-of-use tariff. That makes it practical when you want to leave one compatible device connected and observe its pattern over time.

Automation is the key difference. A schedule can switch a lamp or fan at chosen times, and remote access can show whether the outlet is on. Those features are useful only if you are comfortable depending on an app, network connection, account, and supported service.

Check the exact model before buying: not every Kasa or generic smart plug includes energy monitoring. Product names can look similar while their measurement features differ.

Which one is more accurate?

P3 publishes an accuracy claim of within 0.2% for the P4460. Kasa does not publish an accuracy figure on the KP125M product page we checked. That does not prove one device is more accurate under every load, and we have not performed a controlled side-by-side laboratory test. For household cost tracking, the more important practical question is whether the device records accumulated kWh over the full operating cycle. A one-second watt reading can be misleading for a refrigerator, fan, pump, or another load whose draw changes.

Do plug-in power saver devices work?

Passive plug-in “power saver” boxes do not lower a typical household electricity bill. NIST explains that capacitor-type power-factor correction can reduce current while increasing power factor by the same proportion, leaving the billable real energy unchanged. A monitoring smart plug or advanced power strip can save energy only when it actually keeps a load off for longer.

Be especially careful with plug-in boxes that promise a lower residential bill through power-factor correction alone. The National Institute of Standards and Technology explains that capacitor-type power-factor correction devices do not reduce a typical household electricity bill: the lower current is offset by the higher power factor, leaving the billable real energy unchanged.

Household tariffs vary, but the basic check is the bill itself. For example, Ofgem explains that the domestic unit rate is charged per kWh, alongside standing charges and taxes. If your bill explicitly includes demand, kVA, or reactive-energy charges, ask the utility or a qualified engineer about that tariff rather than assuming a consumer plug-in box will help.

This is also a safety question, not just a savings claim. The UK Office for Product Safety and Standards has recalled a generic plug-in electricity-saving box after testing found serious fire and electric-shock risks. That recall does not mean every plug-in monitor is unsafe; it means a passive “saver box” should not be confused with a properly rated meter or energy-monitoring smart plug. Check the exact model for a genuine local safety certification and official recalls before use.
