How it works

Kilowatts = amps × volts × power factor ÷ 1000. For DC or resistive loads the power factor is 1.

Frequently asked questions

How many kW is 20 amps?

At 230 V and power factor 1, that is 4.6 kW. At 120 V it is 2.4 kW. Voltage matters, so enter yours.

When is power factor not 1?

For inductive loads like motors and compressors, often around 0.8. DC and resistive heating are 1.

Why convert amps to kW?

To size circuits, generators and supplies, and to compare against appliance power ratings given in kW.
